Today I will tell you how you can organize a space in your home.
I like to start with tidying and vacuuming the floor of any room before I start on a space. I just find this to make things go smoother and there are less dust bunnies hopping around. I also like to have a blanket or a box I can put items in instead of the floor in case I get interrupted. I personally love a blanket because it gives me so much more overview of all the items.
Before I start organizing I remove everything and giving it a clean. I find it easy to start with an empty space. And since the space is empty I take that opportunity to clean. If you don’t have a plan for your space you can get out a pen and paper and quickly sketch what you want where in the area. Then I look at my organizing tools such as boxes to decide what I could use where.
At this point I start looking at the items I have on the blanket. I start with throwing away all the trash. Some times it is quite easy to know what has to be thrown away so I like get this out-of-the-way. If I know something belongs in another room I put this in a box and keep it to the side. I then start putting things back. Now the tricky part for me is what to do with the left-overs. If you want to keep it you can find a new home for it somewhere else. If you want to sell it take a picture straight away and put it online as soon as possible. If you want to donate it put it in a donate box.
When there is nothing left on the blanket and all the items are put in its place you are done. You can move on the next space. I like to keep a little of the space clear in case I find something when organizing other spaces that belong there. You might have to go through this process multiple times if you still have too much stuff. Remember if it keeps getting messy after you have organized it, you have to revisit the space to find a better solution.
Preparing:
- Tidy and vacuum floor
- Get box or blanket to put items on
- Gather cleaning supplies and organizing tools
Steps:
- Remove all the items and place on blanket.
- Clean the space
- Create a plan
- Throw away the trash
- Remove items that do not belong in the space/room
- Put it back
- Take pictures of items you will sell
- Donate
- Deal with the rest – Throw / Remove / Sell / Donate
- If needed, repeat
Future:
- Do not add more clu tter to an organized area
- Revisit your area at a later date to see if it needs improvement
